My first experience with Airbnb!

Before you even ask, no I wasn’t paid to write this article. It was just such an interesting experience that I am seriously considering using this accommodation method semi-permanently. Let’s be very honest. As I am typing this and I know I sound almost stupid for saying this, but Airbnb isn’t something that is unheard of. However, as I don’t get to travel very often (due to commitments), I haven’t exactly had the chance to try out this cool way of accommodation.

That opportunity however, came when my husband and I decided to make a weekend trip to Singapore to try out some of their escape games. I would’ve thought that we would stay in a hotel, but then, my husband noticed that an Airbnb was a LOT cheaper than a hotel room. And since we were only going for a short while, we knew that a hotel was just a shower and a bed. We wanted to make the most out of our time in Singapore.

For those of you who aren’t too sure what Airbnb is, Airbnb is basically a website for people to list, find and rent lodging. Users can be categorized as hosts and guests. There are different types of accommodation. Hosts can even rent out lodgings for up to months, or choose to host guests who are traveling for just a couple of days. You can rent a small bedroom from a house that a host lives in, or rent a whole bungalow depending on your budget.

So my husband logged on to the website and the mobile app and found us a quaint little place in Woodleigh Park. Our host’s name was Rick and he was such a nice person. We didn’t get to meet him when we first checked out our room though. He was busy at work. But his house helper let us in, and we were totally amazed.

Our room was part of a small little apartment in Woodleigh Park. The building has been around for about 80 years now. It really reminded me of the home I used to live in back in Taiping when I would visit my grandaunty’s home. The studio we were given was an annexe private room with an ensuite bathroom and private access to the room. There is a shared kitchen and living room which we didn’t really use since we spent most of our time outdoors anyway.

Screenshots of the photos of our accommodation

Although breakfast was part of the accommodation, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. We looked around town for a great dimsum place so we didn’t really partake in the breakfast. This apartment was a less than 5 minutes walk away from the Woodleigh MRT station. Since we were in Singapore, their MRT system is really one of the best I’ve ever seen. Everywhere is walkable around Singapore. We got our MRT card from a kiosk in the airport. And we topped up once only. That card (approximately $ 22 worth) lasted us the entire trip with about $6 remaining.

Singapore is definitely a place I would recommend as a place for a good weekend escape. There’s also a lot to do and discover there. For example, when we were there, we didn’t get to visit the Artscience Museum which is currently (until 14 February 2016) showing The Collider exhibition. This exhibition displays the Large Hadron Collider. This exhibition just sounds incredibly amazing and I would’ve loved to pay it a visit. Maybe sometime soon I will make a trip back!

Singapore is one of those places that I see myself visiting every now and again, now that I’ve realized the convenience and the fact that it’s a country that is closest to Malaysia. Now if only the currency would go down…

#blogmasday4 (so sorry I missed day 1-3!!! Will try and catch up soon!)

My Hometown: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

I've lived in Kuala Lumpur for the last 29 years of my life, and never did I really consider blogging about her. Well, not until I recently realized, I've been going out a lot around town, but never really "documenting" my adventures, so here goes nothing! :D

Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and most populous city in Malaysia. Most people will think it's just all skyscrapers and buildings, but it's surrounded by the best places for live theatre and music. So for most of you, you'll already know that I'm an avid performing arts fan. I love going to catch some musicals, live jazz performances, etc. So for me, in Kuala Lumpur, here are the top 3 locations of my own personal preference to catch some lovely works of art.

(Not ranked in any way, shape or form)

1. Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), Sentul

Around the bustling city, lies this treasure trove. Supporting local and even international performances, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre has a fair share of talents. If you're looking for a musical, or a ballet, or a theatre performance, this would be the first place to check out. It's serene surroundings provide a wonderful atmosphere for performing arts enthusiasts like me to come and watch a show in peace. Show prices depend on the performing companies themselves. Some may range from as cheap as RM 20 to as expensive as RM 200. Although it was the very first performing arts centre in Kuala Lumpur, it most definitely wasn't the last.

I've been to KLPAC at least 10 times in the last 7 plus months alone. It's really a culture hub. It doesn't just showcase performances, but also organizes workshops every now and again for individuals who are interested in honing their craft as well. Definitely one of the first places to check out in Kuala Lumpur if you're a performing arts enthusiasts like myself!

Do visit their link to find out more information about their upcoming schedules!

2. Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC), Damansara Perdana

Located in the middle of the bustling area of Damansara Perdana, when you walk into DPAC, you automatically know that you are walking into a performing arts area. DPAC has the ultimate box office area, sorta like what you see in movies from New York! What I like about DPAC is the way they have located their multiple stages. For example, the main theatre is located one floor below the black box. That way, they are not too close to each other and sometimes, that annoys me. I also love the fact that DPAC has their own ballet company. No, joining their company was never an option for me as I don't have the skills. However, I have joined workshops in their lovely studio located one floor above the main theatre.

There are also MANY eateries around the area. So if you're feeling hungry before or after a show, walk around this beautiful location. Sometimes I even go to the area just to have a cup of coffee or eat! That's how much this place rocks! :D

To know more about DPAC, click this link right here!

3. Alexis, Jalan Ampang

Alexis Bar and Bistro are famous for their live performances almost every weekend. What's interesting about their performances is that they are NEVER the same! From what I understand, performers pitch their ideas to Alexis (which usually includes a theme) and Alexis will give their approval. Now, here's the best part, ALL THEIR SHOWS ARE FREE OF CHARGE! Alexis provides a wonderful array of food and drink choices which you pay for, but you get to watch the shows for free! HOW WONDERFUL IS THAT?

I've always enjoyed the food at Alexis, so when I have friends performing, it's really a no-brainer for me to just go early, have some dinner (the shows normally start around 9pm or 10pm), get a nice table, chat with some friends, and then of course, enjoy a lovely jazz/live performance show. The quality of the performers have been nothing less than tiptop and it shows a wonderful support for the local jazz acts. You can visit their website to find out more about their shows throughout the month.

Of course, these are not the ONLY locations in Kuala Lumpur to get some performing arts action. These are just my personal top 3. Since I'm always on the lookout for new things to do and places to go, a great website to help me discover new places is Eventbrite! Eventbrite is a global marketplace for people to find events within YOUR geographical area! It's so cool! Whether it's for me to look for an event around my area, or to look for things to do while I'm traveling, it's perfect!

If you are interested in starting up your own event, first of all, don't forget to invite me (*wink*). Secondly, why not try using Eventbrite's event management and ticket selling pages? They're free event management tools for you to use to help spread the word about your event and track its progress. Click this link to find out more!

Have any of you used Eventbrite before? Any tips that you can offer? :D

Let me know!

In the Life of DancerGal: My new hobby!

Updated 150914: List of rooms played (will update)

Hey guys! I know it's been a super long while since my last update. I promised to blog more, but I've been so busy doing so many things (yes, at the same time!) that I haven't really found the time to blog. So anyway, here's a simple and quick update about my newfound hobby: ESCAPING from rooms!

Code Factory

Escape Zone

Traphauz

Break the Code
Mission Break
Breakout
Rush Hour
Escape Room
MissionQ
Escape Dungeon
Freeing Room

When we (and by we, I mean SammoBammo and myself) heard about this, we weren't too sure about it. And then, a few of my friends attempted it for the very first time. Now, if someone doesn't know much about me, all they have to do is play one round of Escape Room with me and then they'll know how I am. I can be insanely competitive so picking the right group was essential and I'm glad we've found an amazing team :)

Anyway, back to the story, the group of friends of mine who played it didn't really make it so we thought we'd try it out. We picked a room that was just for the two of us and suitable for two people. Our first room together was "Abandoned Factory" from Escape Room, e@Curve. We lost the room, but the person who let us out gave us three options. One, leave the room and come back again. Two, he'll give us the hint of the next puzzle and then we come back again. Three, crack the room completely. I wanted to know what was the reason we didn't make it out, so we decided to crack the room. After cracking the room, I learned a couple of things including how to keep my competitiveness in check. Once that was over, we were quite confident to play with my cousin and his partner-in-crime. They have been at this quite often and even blog about each room they play! Read their blog here: http://enigmaticescape.blogspot.com

We then moved on to our second room, "Prison Break" from Escape Room, e@Curve. We had pretty good teamwork and so, we actually managed to escape. The feeling of winning was so intense, that we just had to keep going. Since then, we have been playing rather consistently and although we've only lost one room together, we substitute that horrible disappointing feeling by ensuring that we win more rooms. Here are some of the rooms we've played thus far (and their results, cos I really enjoy gloating!) :P

  59. "The Asylum", Escape Zone, Kota Damansara - Win (6 pax - #3 on the Hall of Fame)
So, a teeny background story about the "Perfect" status. Freeing Room has this thing where instead of just escaping the room, you would have to complete a mission. This mission, should you choose to accept it, will determine on whether you just "win" or achieve the "perfect" status. If you only escape the room but don't complete the mission, then you will just "win". If you manage to escape the room and complete the mission, you will achieve the "perfect" status. When we were given the briefing, we thought it was a bit tough, but pfft!

Playing in a consistent mode (almost two rooms per week) with my cousin and his partner, allowed us to come up with a team name. Our team is called "Team SPeeDS" which has two meanings. Firstly, the word SPeeDS spells the following: Charmaine Andrew Sam Patrick Enigmatic Escape Doro Sheryl.  Secondly, the word speeds also represents the fact that we try our best to get out as fast as we can. It's been an amazing and productive teamwork and we've been accomplishing a hell-load! All hail #TeamCASPeeDS!!!

Some people might be all judgmental and shit and wondering why the heck is this woman taking this little game so seriously?! Well, here's the thing, I don't take things lightly. I love the intensity, the competitive attitude that this "little game" brings to me. I love the satisfaction of winning and the disappointment of losing, which encourages me to understand why we lost and do better the next time around. It's almost somewhat of an addiction and I can honestly tell you, it doesn't seem to be getting lighter. There are rooms that our partners have already played and we will have to catch up, but I do believe that all is well and we will prevail! :)

So yes, that's just a quick and simple update of me. I will be doing my best to blog a bit more, and updating you on the bits and pieces of myself. If you want to get to know me better, please do not hesitate to follow me on the following social media platforms:

In the Life of DancerGal: Reliving my childhood with Walt Disney!

I went to the Putrajaya International Fireworks Competition over one of the weekends with some MSS friends (Adry, Min, Dennis and Kevin) to check out some fireworks and play with my new toy! :P Little did I know, I was going to be thoroughly surprised and amazingly happy by the end of the night (before your mind starts to wonder, no, I was not proposed to and I am not engaged!)

From what I knew, the contender for that evening was from the U.S of A. We tried looking for a spot upon arriving at the Pusat Maritime, Putrajaya. There were so many people and it was so crowded. We took at least about 20 mins just looking for a good spot, which we did find in the end. Anyway, after setting up, Dennis helped me set my camera to certain settings and taught me how to use it. Once that was done, we sort of stood there waiting for about 15 to 20 mins more. Then an awesome announcement was made. They did a short profile about the contender from USA and guess what? The contender was from WALT DISNEY!

Walt Disney's signature

I was jumping with joy and super ecstatic when I heard their name! Imagine the look on a 5-year old child that just got a huge cotton candy. I knew that this competition included choreography between music and fireworks. That means, 25 minutes of Disney music, 25 mins of fireworks... wow. I was so superbly excited. Honestly speaking, I didn't take that many (good) shots, but I was proud of a few. Please note that these photos are NOT edited hence the horrible smoke around the fireworks and incomplete shots. I'm sorry I have yet to figure out how to play with Photoshop and I would rather post this sooner rather than later. So please go easy on me okay?

Here are some photos from my awesome camera-savvy friends. I honestly speaking am in awe by the beauty of their photos and I can't wait to learn more from them! :)

It was pretty epic. We were entertained by songs from my childhood favourite cartoons like Cinderella, Tarzan, Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, etc. It was just so much fun that I couldn't stop smiling after the whole thing was over. Like I said, I was like the 5-year old child who just got her favourite cotton candy. I was quite frustrated in the beginning of it all, but by the end of it, I was just like OMG OMG OMG! (If you know me well enough, you'd probably be able to picture me saying this!)

OH YEAH! I'm a happy girl! <3 div="" nbsp="">

In the Life of DancerGal: Four Drug-store Make Up Products that SavedMe!

Okay, so yesterday was super crazy. I knew that there was this event called the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2013 (APEA 2013) happening yesterday. The Founder/Mentor of Cempaka Schools, Dato' Freida Pilus, won the award under the Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award. Because the event was of such that SammoBammo made a tux just to wear to the event, when I found out that I wasn't attending this event, I was sorta relieved (no shopping = saving $$$!). However, as luck would have it, yesterday itself at around 11am, I received a call saying that someone would not be able to make it and that I was specifically invited by Dato' Freida straight after this person couldn't come. This happened while I was at work, which meant no clothes, no contact lenses and no make up.

So during lunch, I flew home to pick up a selection of dresses for her to choose for me, and made calls to my optician to make sure he got me the contact lenses. I asked for dailies so that I could wear them for that night only. When I got back to my office, I realised that I had forgotten about make up. So after work, I headed back to SammoBammo's home where we took turns showering and getting ready. By the time we were both dressed, it was almost 6.45pm. We left for Bangsar Village where I ran into Caring Pharmacy to pick up the following 4 products.

Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping Mascara

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey

Maybelline Clear Smooth Shine Free Clear BB Stick
SilkyGirl Eyeshadow Quad
So in the car, I worked up some magic. I first started out with the BB Stick and used it as Foundation. Made dots and lines across my face and blended it in with my fingers. Yes, did all of this in a moving car. All in the name of vain! It was tough cos not only did I not have a proper brush, I also had no rubber bands to tie up my hair, which meant that hair kept falling back into my face. And cos at this point, I had already put on my contacts, I wasn't able to face the aircond as well.

After blending in the foundation, I started on the eyes using the quad. Used the silver on my middle and inner parts of the eyes. My fingers were the brushes. It was tough using my fingers because with brushes, you can define how thick and thin you want them to be. So it was kinda tough making them thin. Once I had blended out the silver which I used to sort of define my eyes, I used the navy blue to line the top part of my eyes. Seemed pretty simple right? Well, aside from using my finger as an eyeliner brush, technically it was kinda easy.

I wanted to use my eyeliner and mascara but cos the car was being such a bumping monster, I couldn't do it up until I got to the hotel. So I used the Balm Stain and rubbed a teeny bit onto my fingers to be used as cheek stains (because I was too cheap to get a blusher) and then went onto stain my lips. Killed two birds with one stone! Woot woot!

When we were in KL town, traffic was kinda bad, and at each traffic light, I would whip out the mascara and liner. By the time we got to the hotel (Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur), I was already done with everything :) SammoBammo was pretty impressed by the whole thing especially cos I did everything while my car was super bumpy! By the time I got to the hotel, I looked something like this...

Final look when I got to the hotel...

SammoBammo and I

At the end of the night...

Photo with SammoBammo and his dad
I was pretty pleased with the look I got by just picking them off the shelves in 5 mins. Although it was quite stressful, but I'm grateful things turned out the way they did. :) I had a great and fantastic evening and I cannot wait for more awesome stories to come!

In the Life of DancerGal: Raya 2013

This year, I celebrated Raya for the second time around. I've been in a (relatively) steady relationship with SB for about 3 years plus now, but only started celebrating Raya with him since last year. Somehow, this year's Raya felt different.

Hari Raya in Malaysia, as most of you may know it, is a celebration of the mark of the ending of the holy month of Ramadan (fasting). So last year, I tried fasting for the very first time. I think if I'm not mistaken, I lasted like less than a week? A few days maybe? This year (and quite proudly!), I fasted for FOURTEEN days! Yupe! 14. I was super pressed for time this year though, so here's my random Raya story :)

It was the weekend before Raya when I got my Baju Kurung. I was totally traumatised by that experience. Imagine this. Last weekend of shopping before heading home for the celebration. Now imagine the number of people in ONE shopping mall. It was like hell on earth. It took me about 20 minutes to find the right one, bought it and got the hell out. To which, I actually did :)

SammoBammo and I in my yellow baju kurung!
On the morning of Raya day 1, I arrived bright and early in the morning to SB's house. This was kinda funny but fun. Because SB was getting ready to the mosque, he shouldn't come into contact with anyone of the opposite sex that he isn't related to. So we couldn't even shake hands, let alone hug. Haha! It was pretty fun. And so, he went off while I went off with his mum.

After his mum was done with the hairdresser, we headed off to SB's grandma's house and the song that came to my head was "FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD"!!! I was so excited to get a whiff of the food that was prepared. But of course, I went in and made sure that I "salam" everyone and wished everyone. Once that was done, we made our way over for the food!

I'm sorry I don't have any photos cos we were too busy eating! MUAHAHAHA!

After the makan-makan session, we proceeded to the living room where we had some chatting and a photo-taking session. It was very relaxing and enjoyable :)

SammoBammo and I
All in all, I had an awesome couple of hours with SB and his family :) Thank you for the awesome Raya celebration. Selamat Hari Raya to all :)

In the Life of DancerGal: Malaysia Social Media Week '13 WelcomeCocktail!

So yesterday evening, I attended the welcome cocktail for the Malaysia Social Media Week 2013. It was super fun and I had the pleasure of meeting quite a number of people whom I've gotten to know via Twitter but never really had the opportunity of meeting in person :)

The event was held at Berjaya Hotel, located next to Berjaya Times Square. My attire for the evening was relatively simple yet elegant. I wore a black dress from Kitschen (RM 59.90) paired with my beautiful Melissa Wings heels in nude (RM 475.00) and a black clutch from H&M (RM 99.90). I thought the ensemble would be under the category of smart casual. It was simple, easy, no fuss. Although note to self, I need to start looking into designing my own name cards and carry a smaller (and thinner) wallet with me for such occasions :)

I arrived insanely early, and so I decided that I would go for a quick cuppa at the Starbucks located in the mall itself. After the cuppa, it was still pretty early so I decided to be a nerd and look around RadioShack for some nerdy loves. Got myself a chic case for my phone by Uniq. The colors are so pretty (lilac and light pink!). Anyway, this cost me RM 99, but pretty worth it considering the fact I don't buy cases very often (or at least, I'd like to think so!) :P

After the shopping, I decided to take a break from all that shopping and hang out in the lobby at the hotel. I then got in touch with Aswin (tweet handle: @aswin_tweet), from My Events as well as Social Media Chambers. We finally met for the first time and I stole this shot off him while he was busy working :P

Then, I found out that Syafique was already on the 14th floor. Syafique, as most of you may know, is the founder of MotivationMY.com and is also the official online media partner for MSMW '13. I am so proud of how far MMY has come along and I'm honored to be one of those who have been there to watch it grow :)

Also met with Cherish, Syafique's colleague from Astro Awani. Have seen her on Instagram and Twitter, but haven't actually met her in person. So happy to have finally done that.

Also met with a couple others whose names are big in the industry like Christopher Tock of EYE Project and Social Grooves, Veron of Social Grooves, etc. It was pretty awesome :) I will let my photos speak for themselves from here on out :)

I must say that on the first night, I knew that the rest of the event was going to be awesome!!! <3 blog="" care="" experiences="" my="" nbsp="" on="" other="" p="" soon="" take="" will="">
